Sleep Assessments Q&A

What are sleep assessments?

Sleep assessments allow your Breathe Airway specialist to find the source of sleep disorders and other conditions that negatively affect sleep quality. Traditional assessments require you to wait several months to see a specialist, and then spend an expensive night at a sleep lab attached to wires in an uncomfortable and unfamiliar setting. At Breathe Airway, we offer office visits that are convenient to you and sleep testing you can do in the comfort of your own home. Using at-home sleep studies including the Sleep Ring and WatchPat, we are able to identify those conditions that may be keeping you from a restful night's sleep.

How do I know if I need a sleep assessment?

Our sleep assessments can diagnose a variety of conditions including sleep pattern disturbance, snoring, sleep disordered breathing, upper airway resistance syndrome, obstructive sleep apnea, and central sleep apnea to name a few. Common symptoms associated with these disorders are:

  • Fatigue
  • Morning headaches
  • Clenching and grinding of teeth
  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Difficulty staying asleep
  • Periods of stopped breathing during sleep
  • Snoring
  • Irritability
  • Problems paying attention
  • Waking up with a dry mouth
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Anxiousness
  • Weight gain

In addition to symptoms, there are several medical conditions strongly associated with sleep disorders. These conditions include:

  • High blood pressure
  • Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD or ADHD)
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Mood disorders
  • Obesity
  • Cardiovascular diseases
  • Asthma
  • Allergies

If you have any of these symptoms or conditions, then a sleep assessment may be the right thing for you.

What should I expect during sleep assessments?

During sleep assessments at Breathe Airway, you can expect:

Medical history review

During a medical history review, your specialist asks questions about your personal and family medical history, medication regimen, and your lifestyle habits. They also discuss your symptoms and preferred treatment options.

Physical exam

Your Breathe Airway provider will conduct a brief physical exam focusing on those areas that may be correlated to poor sleep.

Diagnostic tests

Depending on your health, medical history, and disease risk factors, the Breathe Airway team may recommend you for further testing including imaging or home sleep testing. The team at Breathe Airway may also consult with other professionals if the need arises.

Which treatments can improve sleep quality?

Rarely does one size fit all when it comes to treatment planning. At Breathe Airway we work with you to customize a treatment that works for you and your lifestyle. Your personalized treatment plan may include making lifestyle changes, oral appliance therapy, a tongue tie release, myofunctional therapy or using a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine to improve nighttime breathing.
